Two Textiles from the National Museum, Edinburgh

Abstract

This paper provides a detailed analysis of two textiles from the National Museum, Edinburgh, complete with illustrations. The first is the Balmaclellan diamond twill, which is a light brown wool found wrapped around four little packets of Celtic bronzes. Secondly, the Falkirk tartan, which is a dark brown and pale greenish-brown wool, discovered with the famous Falkirk hoard of silver coins. Crowfoot concludes by dating the Balmaclellan diamond twill with some probability to the second to third century, and the Falkirk tartan with certainty to the third century.
