Abstract

Statistical methods of analysing detailed distribution maps are illustrated by work correlating the spread of ancient monuments with the natural background of geology, superficial deposits, elevation and slope in the Durness area of Sutherland. The use of the available archaeological evidence as an acceptable sample from which to generalise is justified by the application of the Chi-squared test which showed the sample to be almost random in character.
